CSV to QIF field mapping
QIF uses a one-letter code for each piece of a transaction. This table shows which code each CSV column turns into, and what QIF doesn't carry.
| CSV field | QIF field | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Date | D | Read with the Date format you choose. |
| Description | P | The payee line your app displays. |
| Amount, or Debit and Credit | T | Below zero for spending, above zero for money received. |
| Source account type | !Type: header | The file is written as a Bank account. |
| (end of each row) | ^ | Marks where one transaction stops and the next begins. |
| (no equivalent) | No bank transaction ID | QIF does not carry FITIDs. Duplicate detection depends on the importing app, so review overlaps and import each date range carefully. |
Import a QIF file into Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance or Xero
QIF is still read by GnuCash, Moneydance, Banktivity, Xero and older Quicken. Current Quicken for Windows limits it, so check that tab before you convert.

Where to get a CSV for QIF conversion
Show me where to download it
Start with your bank's website. Open the account, go to its transactions or statements, and set the date range. Look for Download or Export, then choose CSV. Card accounts work the same way.
Keeping records in a spreadsheet instead? Searching for a CSV to QIF Excel add-in isn't necessary. In Excel, use File › Save As and pick CSV (Comma delimited). Keep one header row with date, description and amount columns, then upload the file here.
Before you convert, delete any summary rows like opening or closing balances. They aren't transactions and would show up as extra lines in the QIF file.
What are CSV and QIF files?
What is a CSV file?
A CSV (comma-separated values) file is plain text in rows and columns. Banks offer it because Excel and Google Sheets open it. Every bank orders and names its columns differently, so accounting software usually asks you to map them.
What is a QIF file?
A QIF file is an older plain-text transaction format read by GnuCash, Moneydance, Banktivity, Xero and some Quicken accounts. It has no bank transaction IDs. Quicken for Windows restricts QIF imports to supported cash, asset and liability accounts; use QFX for checking, savings and credit cards.
QIF labels transaction fields for apps such as GnuCash and Moneydance; a CSV may need column mapping before import.
CSV to QIF import errors and fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Quicken for Windows won't import into your checking or credit card account | Current Quicken for Windows only accepts QIF into cash, asset and liability accounts. | For checking, savings or credit-card imports in Quicken for Windows, use the CSV to QFX converter and follow Quicken's Web Connect requirements. |
| Every transaction appears twice | The same date range was imported more than once and the app did not match the duplicates. QIF carries no FITIDs. | Delete the duplicates in your app. Next time, import each date range only once. |
| Dates are wrong or the import stops | The Date format you chose doesn't match your CSV, or the app read the dates differently. | Set Date format to match the CSV and convert again. In GnuCash, check the date format the assistant asks for. |
| Charges show up as deposits | The Debit and Credit columns were mapped the wrong way round. | Reassign Debit and Credit in the Columns option, then check the preview. |
| Balances or totals appear as transactions | The CSV included summary rows, not only transactions. | Remove those rows from the CSV and upload it again. |
