How QFX fields map to CSV columns

A QFX file stores each transaction as tagged text inside an STMTTRN block. The converter reads those tags and writes them as named columns. This is where each one lands.

QFX fieldCSV fieldNote
DTPOSTEDDateWritten in your selected output date format; the default is YYYY-MM-DD.
NAMEPayee and DescriptionPayee is preserved separately and also contributes to the readable description.
MEMOMemo and DescriptionMemo is preserved separately and may be combined with payee text in Description.
TRNAMTAmount, or Money out and Money inSigned mode keeps one Amount column. Split mode uses positive values in separate Money out and Money in columns.
TRNTYPETypeThe source transaction type, such as DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK or FEE.
CHECKNUM / referenceCheck Number / ReferencePreserved when supplied by the source.
FITIDTransaction IDThe source ID, useful for checking overlaps between downloads.
ACCTID / CURDEFAccount / CurrencyIncluded per row. Account numbers are masked by default; the privacy setting can reveal them.
LEDGERBAL or supplied closing balanceBalanceIncluded when Show running balance is on and a usable balance is available.

Open your QFX to CSV file in Excel or Google Sheets

A CSV is plain text, so any spreadsheet opens it. Double-clicking works, but importing gives you control over dates and long numbers.

Excel

Excel for Microsoft 365 / supported desktop editions · Documentation checked

  1. Open a blank workbook in Excel.
  2. Go to Data › From Text/CSV and select the CSV you downloaded.
  3. In the preview, set File Origin to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8) and Delimiter to Comma.
  4. If the Transaction ID column shows as 2.03E+10, click Transform Data, set that column's type to Text, then Close & Load.
  5. Otherwise click Load. Your transactions appear as a table you can sort, filter and total.

  2. Upload the downloaded CSV and choose an import location, such as a new sheet.
  3. Choose the separator used in your CSV, or automatic detection, and import the data.
  4. Review dates, amounts and long identifiers. Keep identifiers as text and do not enable formula interpretation for untrusted transaction descriptions.

Where to get a QFX file (Quicken doesn't export one)

Show me where to download it

Your QFX file comes from your bank's website, not from Quicken. Quicken imports QFX files, but it has no option to export them.

To download one:

  1. Sign in to your bank's online banking in a web browser.
  2. Open the account and find Download, Export or Download transactions.
  3. Choose the date range you need.
  4. Pick the format labeled Quicken, Quicken Web Connect or .qfx.
  5. Save the file. If your browser offers to open it in Quicken, choose save instead.

If Quicken already pulls transactions from your bank automatically, no QFX file is saved on your computer. Download one from the bank's site as above.

Leaving Quicken? A QFX download only holds what the bank lets you pull. Many banks limit how far back you can go, so download in date-range chunks if you need a longer history.

What are QFX and CSV files?

What is a QFX file?

A QFX file is Quicken Web Connect, used for bank and credit card downloads. It is based on OFX and adds Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help identify previously imported entries. Acceptance depends on the institution and your Quicken edition and services.

What is a CSV file?

A CSV (comma-separated values) file is plain text in rows and columns. Banks offer it because Excel and Google Sheets open it. Every bank orders and names its columns differently, so accounting software usually asks you to map them.

QFX is built for Quicken to read, so converting it to CSV is the simplest way to see the same transactions in a spreadsheet anyone can open.

QFX to CSV problems and fixes

ErrorCauseFix
Dates show the wrong month, or stay as textYour spreadsheet reads dates in a different order than the CSV uses.

Convert again with the date format your spreadsheet expects, or use YYYY-MM-DD, which Excel and Google Sheets both recognize.

Transaction IDs show as 2.03E+10Excel treats long numbers as numbers and switches to scientific notation.

Import with Data › From Text/CSV and set the Transaction ID column to Text before loading.

Payee names show odd characters like éThe file was opened with the wrong text encoding.

In Excel's import preview, set File Origin to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8).

The file is rejected as the wrong formatThe file is a QBO, OFX or PDF, or a Quicken data file (.qdf) rather than a bank download.

Follow the link to the matching converter. For a .qdf file, download a QFX from your bank instead.

Fewer transactions than you expectedThe bank only included the date range you picked when you downloaded.

Download again from your bank with a wider date range, then convert the new file.
