Where to get the OFX file for Quicken

Show me where to download it

Check your bank's download options first. If it offers a Quicken or QFX download, use that and skip this page.

If OFX is the only choice, sign in to online banking and open the account. Look for "Download", "Export" or "Download transactions" and choose OFX. Some banks call it "Money" or "Microsoft Money". Pick a date range that starts after your last import into Quicken.

Moving from another personal finance app? If it exports OFX, use that export. Convert it here, then import the QFX into Quicken.

What are OFX and QFX files?

What is an OFX file?

An OFX (Open Financial Exchange) file is the standard format banks use to send transactions to finance software. Xero, Sage, MYOB, Moneydance, GnuCash and QuickBooks Online read it. Dates, amounts and a unique ID per transaction are labeled, so there's no column mapping.

What is a QFX file?

A QFX file is Quicken Web Connect, used for bank and credit card downloads. It is based on OFX and adds Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help identify previously imported entries. Acceptance depends on the institution and your Quicken edition and services.

Convert OFX to QFX when Quicken for Windows won't import the plain OFX file your bank gave you.

OFX and QFX import errors in Quicken

ErrorCauseFix
Quicken won't import the OFX file, or says it can't verify the financial institutionThe institution is not accepted, the identifiers do not match, or Web Connect services are unavailable for this edition.

Confirm that the selected bank and institution IDs match your own account, and that your software supports that bank's Web Connect service. Correct the details and reconvert; do not substitute an unrelated bank.

You renamed the file from .ofx to .qfx and Quicken still rejects itRenaming changes the file extension, not the contents. The Intuit fields are still missing.

Convert the original OFX file here instead of renaming it.

Transactions show up twiceThe account also downloads from your bank, or the same period was imported from a different file.

Review duplicate matches and overlapping date ranges in the account register before accepting entries. If Quicken reports a connection conflict, follow its support guidance before changing online services.

Transactions land in the wrong kind of account"Account type" didn't match the account in Quicken. A credit card file sent to checking is a common case.

Convert again with the matching account type.

Use QFX for bank and credit card accounts.

OFX and QFX files: your questions

Limitations

Use the details for the bank that holds your account. A directory listing or an Intuit bank ID does not guarantee acceptance by QuickBooks or Quicken; your edition, subscription and the institution's Web Connect support also matter.

File privacy

File-converter uploads and results are temporarily stored in private storage. Uploads are deleted after a successful conversion; abandoned uploads and results are automatically deleted after about an hour. Download links are temporary.
