QBO to CSV field mapping

A QBO file stores each transaction as a block of tags. The converter turns every block into one CSV row, with these columns.

QBO fieldCSV fieldNote

NAMEPayee and DescriptionPayee is preserved separately and also contributes to the readable description.
MEMOMemo and DescriptionMemo is preserved separately and may be combined with payee text in Description.
TRNAMTAmount, or Money out and Money inSigned mode keeps one Amount column. Split mode uses positive values in separate Money out and Money in columns.
TRNTYPETypeThe source transaction type, such as DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK or FEE.
CHECKNUM / referenceCheck Number / ReferencePreserved when supplied by the source.
FITIDTransaction IDThe source ID, useful for checking overlaps between downloads.

Open your QBO export in Excel or Google Sheets

Double-clicking the CSV usually works. Importing it keeps your dates and amounts exactly as you chose them, which matters for non-US date formats.

Where to download a QBO file from your bank

Show me where to download it

Banks offer QBO files as a QuickBooks download. In online banking, open the account's transactions, then choose Download or Export. Pick QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) and the date range you want.

You may also have a .qbo file from someone else, such as a client who downloaded it for you. Upload it the same way.

Typed "QBO" because you use QuickBooks Online? That's a different task. See "How do I export from QuickBooks Online to CSV?" in the questions below.

What are QBO and CSV files?

What is a QBO file?

A QBO file is QuickBooks Web Connect, a bank-transaction format used by QuickBooks Online and supported QuickBooks Desktop editions. It is based on OFX and includes Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help the importer recognise previously imported entries; review matches and duplicates before accepting them.

What is a CSV file?

A CSV (comma-separated values) file is plain text in rows and columns. Banks offer it because Excel and Google Sheets open it. Every bank orders and names its columns differently, so accounting software usually asks you to map them.

Convert QBO to CSV when you need to read, sort or edit bank transactions in a spreadsheet first.
