Import the QBO file into QuickBooks
QuickBooks Desktop only takes Web Connect files with a .qbo extension, so that's where this file matters most. QuickBooks Online takes it too.
QuickBooks Desktop
QuickBooks Desktop Web Connect · Documentation checked
- Back up your company file first: File › Back Up Company › Create Local Backup.
- Go to File › Utilities › Import › Web Connect Files.
- Select the .qbo file and click Open.
- Choose Use an existing QuickBooks account and pick the bank or card account. Pick a new account only if this is its first import.
- Click Continue, then review and add the transactions in Bank Feeds.
QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks Online · Documentation checked
- Go to Transactions › Bank transactions. In the newer menu, it's All apps › Accounting › Bank transactions.
- Click the arrow on Link account and choose Upload from file.
- Choose the .qbo file and click Continue.
- Pick the QuickBooks account the transactions belong to, then confirm.
- Review and accept the transactions in the For review tab.
QuickBooks Online also accepts .qfx files. Try uploading the original QFX first. Convert it only if QuickBooks Online rejects it.
Where your QFX file comes from
Show me where to download it
A QFX file is a download from a bank's website, meant for Quicken. Look for it on the account's transaction or activity page.
- Sign in to the bank's site and open the account.
- Find Download, Export or a download icon.
- Pick the date range.
- Choose Quicken (.qfx) or Quicken Web Connect as the format.
- Save the file.
Check the format list first. If the bank also offers QuickBooks (.qbo) or QuickBooks Web Connect, download that instead. You won't need to convert anything.
Working from a client's files? Ask for the bank's .qfx download, not their Quicken data file (.qdf). Quicken can't export QFX, so the download has to come from the bank.
What are QFX and QBO files?
What is a QFX file?
A QFX file is Quicken Web Connect, used for bank and credit card downloads. It is based on OFX and adds Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help identify previously imported entries. Acceptance depends on the institution and your Quicken edition and services.
What is a QBO file?
A QBO file is QuickBooks Web Connect, a bank-transaction format used by QuickBooks Online and supported QuickBooks Desktop editions. It is based on OFX and includes Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help the importer recognise previously imported entries; review matches and duplicates before accepting them.
QFX and QBO hold the same transactions, but QuickBooks Desktop's Web Connect import only accepts .qbo files with a bank ID it recognizes.
QFX to QBO import errors and fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "QuickBooks is unable to verify the financial institution information for this download" | The institution is not accepted, the identifiers do not match, or Web Connect services are unavailable for this edition. | Confirm that the selected bank and institution IDs match your own account, and that your software supports that bank's Web Connect service. Correct the details and reconvert; do not substitute an unrelated bank. |
| The same verify message, even with the right bank | The QuickBooks Desktop edition no longer has supported Web Connect services. | Update to a supported QuickBooks Desktop version, then import again. |
| The file opens in Quicken, or QuickBooks Desktop won't list it | Your computer links .qfx to Quicken, and Web Connect in QuickBooks Desktop looks for .qbo. | Convert to QBO, then import with File › Utilities › Import › Web Connect Files. |
| Some transactions don't appear after import | QuickBooks already has those transaction IDs (FITIDs), so it skips them as duplicates. | No fix needed. Check Bank Feeds or the register for the earlier import. |
| QuickBooks Online won't accept the QFX upload | QuickBooks Online couldn't read the QFX file as uploaded. | Convert to QBO here and upload the .qbo through Upload from file. |
QFX to QBO converter FAQ
Yes. The QFX to QBO converter is free to use, and you don't have to sign up.
Both are Intuit Web Connect files built on OFX. QFX is made for Quicken, and QBO is made for QuickBooks. The main differences are the Intuit header fields and which product accepts the file.
Sometimes. Renaming only changes the extension. If the bank ID inside isn't one QuickBooks Desktop accepts, you'll get the "unable to verify the financial institution" error.
Yes. Upload the .qfx through Link account › Upload from file. Use this converter if that upload fails, or if you work in QuickBooks Desktop.
The converter preserves existing FITIDs. Transaction IDs help your software recognise previously imported transactions. Review duplicate matches and overlapping date ranges; an ID is not a guarantee that every import will be de-duplicated.
Use an edition with supported Web Connect services and an institution your QuickBooks Desktop accepts. Intuit support and subscription requirements change; check the official guide for your edition rather than relying on a fixed age cutoff.
Files are encrypted with AES-256 and deleted automatically.
Limitations
Use the details for the bank that holds your account. A directory listing or an Intuit bank ID does not guarantee acceptance by QuickBooks or Quicken; your edition, subscription and the institution's Web Connect support also matter.
File privacy
File-converter uploads and results are temporarily stored in private storage. Uploads are deleted after a successful conversion; abandoned uploads and results are automatically deleted after about an hour. Download links are temporary.
