QFX format to PDF: before and after

What each QFX tag becomes in the PDF report

QFX data sits in tags that only finance software reads. The report turns those tags into labeled headings and columns. Here's the mapping.

QFX fieldPDF fieldNote
FI › ORGBank name (report header)Shown as the bank sent it.
BANKID / ACCTIDAccount headerThe account number is masked by default. The bank or routing ID may still be printed; check the report before sharing.
ACCTTYPEAccount typeChecking, savings, money market or credit line, as the bank labels it.
DTSTART / DTENDDate rangeThe period the bank included in the download.
CURDEFCurrencyPrinted next to the date range.
DTPOSTEDDateOne row per transaction, oldest first.
NAME / MEMODescriptionNAME is the payee. MEMO is added after it when the bank includes one.
CHECKNUMCheck / RefCheck numbers or references appear in the report's Check / Ref column when supplied.
TRNAMTMoney out / Money inSpending and receipts are positive values in separate columns and totals.
LEDGERBAL › BALAMTClosing balanceAlso used to build the Balance column when you turn on running balance.
FITIDNot printedThe bank's internal transaction ID. It's useful to software, not to readers.

Open, print or share the PDF

There's no import step. The report is a standard PDF, so it opens in any PDF reader, browser or phone.

PDF readers

Standard PDF / supported PDF reader · Documentation checked

  1. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on a Mac, or any web browser.
  2. To print, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on a Mac. Match the printer's paper to the size you picked, Letter or A4.
  3. To share, attach the PDF to an email or upload it to your accountant's client portal.
  4. To archive, save it next to the original QFX file. A name like "Sample Bank 0000 2026-03.pdf" keeps months in order.

Where to get a QFX file to convert

Show me where to download it

QFX files are made by banks, for Quicken. You download them from online banking. Quicken itself can't save one.

Most banks put the option on the account activity page:

  1. Log in to online banking on a computer.
  2. Open the account and look for a link named Download, Export or Download activity.
  3. Set the dates you want in the report.
  4. Choose Quicken or Quicken Web Connect (.qfx) as the file type.
  5. Save it to your computer instead of letting it open in Quicken.

Bookkeepers often get QFX files from clients who use Quicken at home. Ask the client to send the .qfx download itself. A Quicken data file (.qdf) or backup won't work here.

What are QFX and PDF files?

What is a QFX file?

A QFX file is Quicken Web Connect, used for bank and credit card downloads. It is based on OFX and adds Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help identify previously imported entries. Acceptance depends on the institution and your Quicken edition and services.

What is the PDF report?

This PDF is a printable transaction report made from your file, with account details, a date range, transactions and totals. It is marked Not a bank statement. Download official statements from your bank when you need a bank-issued document.

A QFX file is intended for finance software; a PDF report lets anyone read, print or file the same transactions without installing Quicken.

QFX to PDF converter errors and fixes

ErrorCauseFix
No running balance appearsRunning balance is off, or the source file has no usable balance data.

Turn on Show running balance and review again. If the file has no balance data, the report has transactions and totals only; use the bank's official statement to confirm balances.

Payee names are cut short or all in capitalsThe bank wrote them that way in the NAME tag, often limited to 32 characters.

Look in the description for the MEMO text, which often holds the rest. The report can only show what the bank sent.

The upload is refusedThe file is a Quicken data file (.qdf), a backup, or a different format like OFX or QBO.

Use the .qfx you downloaded from your bank. For other formats, follow the link to the right converter.

A lender or landlord won't accept the PDFThe report is a summary of a QFX file, not a document issued by your bank.

Download the official statement from your bank's website instead.

QFX to PDF questions

Limitations

This is a transaction report, not an official bank statement. Account numbers are masked by default, but bank/routing identifiers may still appear. Turning off Hide account numbers exposes the full account number. Check privacy and totals before sharing. Running balances need usable balance data; output has separate Money out and Money in columns.

File privacy

File-converter uploads and results are temporarily stored in private storage. Uploads are deleted after a successful conversion; abandoned uploads and results are automatically deleted after about an hour. Download links are temporary.
