OFX format to PDF: what the report looks like
Below is a short OFX file from a fictional Sample Bank, followed by the report built from it. The default Letter report masks account numbers and includes a running balance when balance data is available. Money out and Money in are positive values in separate columns.

How OFX tags become report columns
OFX keeps every detail inside a named tag. The report reads the tags below and prints them as a header and a table. Technical tags such as FITID, the transaction's unique ID, stay in the OFX file.
| OFX field | PDF field | Note |
|---|---|---|
| DTPOSTED | Date | The date the bank posted each transaction. |
| NAME / MEMO | Description | Payee from NAME, plus MEMO text when your bank puts extra detail there. |
| TRNAMT | Money out / Money in | Negative source amounts are shown as positive Money out; positive source amounts appear as Money in. Totals use the same convention. |
| TRNTYPE | Type | Codes such as DEBIT, CREDIT and FEE print as plain words. |
| LEDGERBAL | Closing balance | Also used to work out the Running balance column, when you turn it on. |
| ACCTID (last 4 digits) | Account header | Masked to the last four digits by default. Turning off Hide account numbers reveals the full account number. |
| DTSTART / DTEND | Period | The date range covered by the file. |
| ACCTTYPE | Account header | Shows as Checking, Savings or Credit card. |
| ORG | Account header | The bank name, when the file includes it. |
| CURDEF | Account header | The currency code, such as USD. |
Open, print or share your OFX report
There's nothing to import. The download is a standard PDF, so any PDF reader, browser or phone can open it.
PDF readers
Standard PDF / supported PDF reader · Documentation checked
- Open the downloaded file in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on a Mac, or your web browser.
- Check that the period, the account ending and the closing balance match what you expected.
- To print, choose File › Print. Load the same paper you picked in the converter: Letter or A4.
- Set scaling to Actual size so the columns stay readable.
Share with your accountant
Standard PDF / supported PDF reader · Documentation checked
- Attach the PDF to an email or upload it to your client portal.
- Give it a clear name, for example "SampleBank-0000-2026-03.pdf".
- Keep the original OFX file as well. If the books are in Xero, Sage or MYOB, that file is the one to import, not the PDF.
- Archive the PDF with your month-end records so anyone can read it later without accounting software.
Where to get your OFX file
Show me where to download it
Most OFX files come from online banking. Sign in, open the account, and look for "Download", "Export" or "Download transactions". Pick OFX as the format. Some banks label it "Money" or "Microsoft Money". Set the date range you want the report to cover, then save the file.
Already downloaded an OFX file to import into Xero, Sage or MYOB? Use that same file here. The report will match what you imported.
Have a QFX file from a Quicken download instead? Use the QFX to PDF converter. It builds the same kind of report.
What are OFX and PDF files?
What is an OFX file?
An OFX (Open Financial Exchange) file is the standard format banks use to send transactions to finance software. Xero, Sage, MYOB, Moneydance, GnuCash and QuickBooks Online read it. Dates, amounts and a unique ID per transaction are labeled, so there's no column mapping.
What is the PDF report?
This PDF is a printable transaction report made from your file, with account details, a date range, transactions and totals. It is marked Not a bank statement. Download official statements from your bank when you need a bank-issued document.
Convert OFX to PDF when a person, not accounting software, needs to read the transactions.
OFX to PDF problems and how to fix them
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Double-clicking the OFX file opens nothing, or launches accounting software | OFX is a data file, not a document. Your computer hands it to whatever app claims .ofx files. | Upload it here and download the PDF report instead. |
| "This doesn't look like an OFX file" | The file is a QFX, QBO, CSV or PDF with a different layout. | Follow the link in the message to the right converter. |
| No running balance appears | Running balance is off, or the source file has no usable balance data. | Turn on Show running balance and review again. If the file has no balance data, the report has transactions and totals only; use the bank's official statement to confirm balances. |
| The report has no transactions | The date range you exported had no activity. | Download a new OFX file from your bank with a wider date range. |
| A lender or landlord won't accept the report | It's a transaction report made from an OFX file, not a bank statement. | Download the official statement from your bank. |
OFX to PDF questions
Yes. Upload the OFX file and Finstatly builds a PDF transaction report from it. You get the account details, the period, each transaction and totals. You can preview the first 10 rows before you download.
A PDF reader can't open OFX directly, because OFX is structured data rather than a document. Convert it to a PDF report first. Then open that report in any PDF reader or browser.
No. The PDF is marked "Not a bank statement" and is generated from your transaction file. Lenders, landlords and agencies may require a document issued by your bank. Download that official statement from the bank.
Yes. Converting an OFX file to PDF is free, and you don't need an account. Upload, preview and download.
Turn on Show running balance and review again. A running balance needs a known source or supplied closing balance. If no usable balance is available, the PDF shows transactions and totals without a Balance column.
Yes. QFX is Quicken's version of OFX. Use the QFX to PDF converter, which produces the same printable report.
Files are encrypted with AES-256 and deleted automatically.
Limitations
This is a transaction report, not an official bank statement. Account numbers are masked by default, but bank/routing identifiers may still appear. Turning off Hide account numbers exposes the full account number. Check privacy and totals before sharing. Running balances need usable balance data; output has separate Money out and Money in columns.
File privacy
