</OFX>QIF to QBO field mapping
QIF marks each line with a single letter, and a caret (^) ends each transaction. Here's how those letters become QBO tags, plus the values QBO needs that QIF never had.
| QIF field | QBO field | Note |
|---|---|---|
| D (date) | DTPOSTED | Read using your QIF date format setting. The apostrophe in 3/ 4'26 means a 2000s year. |
| T (amount) | TRNAMT | Commas are removed. Negative stays money out. |
| P (payee) | NAME | The payee as it appeared in your QIF file. |
| M (memo) | MEMO | Carried over when present. |
| N (check number) | CHECKNUM | Carried over for checks. |
| L (category) | Not carried | QBO files hold no categories. You assign them in QuickBooks when you review. |
| S, $ (split lines) | Not carried | QBO has no splits. The transaction total from T is kept. |
| Not in QIF | FITID | A unique ID is added to each transaction so QuickBooks can track it. |
| !Type:Bank or !Type:CCard | ACCTTYPE | Set by the Account type option. |
| Not in QIF | INTU.BID | Set by the Bank shown in QuickBooks option. |

Where to get your QIF file
Show me where to download it
From Quicken for Windows, go to File › File Export › QIF File. Choose the account and the date range you want, then save.
From Microsoft Money, go to File › Export and choose Loose QIF. Export one account at a time and give each file a clear name.
From your bank, look for Download or Export in online banking and pick the QIF or Quicken (QIF) option. Does your bank also offer QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo)? Download that instead and skip this step. Got a .qfx file? Use our QFX to QBO converter.
What are QIF and QBO files?
What is a QIF file?
A QIF file is an older plain-text transaction format read by GnuCash, Moneydance, Banktivity, Xero and some Quicken accounts. It has no bank transaction IDs. Quicken for Windows restricts QIF imports to supported cash, asset and liability accounts; use QFX for checking, savings and credit cards.
What is a QBO file?
A QBO file is QuickBooks Web Connect, a bank-transaction format used by QuickBooks Online and supported QuickBooks Desktop editions. It is based on OFX and includes Intuit institution details. Transaction IDs help the importer recognise previously imported entries; review matches and duplicates before accepting them.
Convert QIF to QBO because neither QuickBooks Online nor QuickBooks Desktop imports QIF, while both import QBO.
QIF to QBO errors and fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks won't accept your .qif file | QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop don't import QIF. | Convert it to QBO here, then import the QBO file. |
| March 4 shows up as April 3 | QIF dates don't say whether the month or day comes first. | Change the QIF date format option and check the preview before you download. |
| "QuickBooks is unable to verify the financial institution information for this download" | The institution is not accepted, the identifiers do not match, or Web Connect services are unavailable for this edition. | Confirm that the selected bank and institution IDs match your own account, and that your software supports that bank's Web Connect service. Correct the details and reconvert; do not substitute an unrelated bank. |
| The same transactions appear twice | Two QIF exports covered overlapping dates. QIF files carry no IDs that would flag a repeat. | Export ranges that don't overlap. Exclude the extra copies in For review or Bank Feeds. |
QIF to QBO converter questions
No. QuickBooks Online accepts .csv, .txt, .qbo, .ofx and .qfx uploads. QuickBooks Desktop takes Web Connect (.qbo) and IIF files. Converting QIF to QBO gets your data into either one.
Yes. Converting a QIF file to QBO is free, with no account required. Files are encrypted with AES-256 and deleted automatically.
It looks at the dates in your file. A day above 12 settles the order. If every date could go either way, check the preview and switch the QIF date format option if needed.
No. QBO files carry transactions, not categories. You'll categorize them in QuickBooks during review, and QuickBooks Online bank rules can help with repeat payees.
Yes, once it's exported as QIF. Open it in Microsoft Money, use File › Export, and choose Loose QIF. Then upload that file here.
Current Quicken for Windows blocks QIF imports into checking, savings and credit card accounts. For those accounts it expects a QFX file. For QuickBooks, QBO is the format you need.
Limitations
Use the details for the bank that holds your account. A directory listing or an Intuit bank ID does not guarantee acceptance by QuickBooks or Quicken; your edition, subscription and the institution's Web Connect support also matter.
File privacy
File-converter uploads and results are temporarily stored in private storage. Uploads are deleted after a successful conversion; abandoned uploads and results are automatically deleted after about an hour. Download links are temporary.
